Ford cars, like almost every car sold in the UK for the last fifteen years, feature an engine immobiliser to prevent the car from being hot-wired. This immobiliser is unlocked by a chip in the key. How old your car is determines what specific type of key it uses.

When they first introduced immobilisers as standard, Ford car keys used a 'red chip'. Despite the fact that transponder chips are actually clear glass. The Ford 'red-chip' key had a chip embedded in the plastic of the key and was identified by a red chip in the corner. These 'red-chip' keys also had a red 'master key, used to allow owners to program their own keys. However few of these keys were included when the cars were resold. 'Red-chip' keys were replaced by Ford with 'blue-chip' keys. These can be spotted by the blue corner the plastic handle of the key. These didn't include a master key, but still used the glass transponder chip.
Keys for new model Ford cars can be seen to still have the blue corner, but now feature a carbon chip. This is more advanced, more reliable and cheaper.

All keys are cut and programmed at your vehicle. The car is actually programmed to the key rather than the key to the car. Main dealers will tell you they have to code three keys to your vehicle, but we can program just one if you require to keep the costs down as low as possible.
